Smart greens go for grey
Building with ICF blocks is the right decision from the start. Reduced construction time, cost savings, environmental protection and living comfort with insulation against heat and cold are argument enough. Here each small part fits together to form a perfect system.
EPS RAW Material
EPS (expandable polystyrene) is a plastic product that results from the processing of crude oil. It consists of approx.
94% carbon and water plus 4 to 6% pentane. EPS is chemically neutral, free of harmful chlorofluorocarbons and plasticizers and does not give off any water-soluble materials that could lead to environmental pollution. The EPS raw material is heated with steam in a preexpander until the beads reach the desired density, then the beads are suctioned into the aluminium molds, expanded with steam for a second time, fused into their final form and then cooled. The finished EPS components are comprised of up to 98% air and are therefore very light.
EPS Insulating Concrete Forms
One example of the successful use of expandable polystyrene is in INSULATING CONCRETE FORMS (ICFs). They are special forms for interior and exterior walls that are assembled on the building site by locking them together and, after inserting reinforcing steel, filled with concrete. Very high thermal and sound insulation values, up to 75% lower energy requirements and high costs savings are just some of the benefits gained by using EPS forms. Mobile manufacturing plants set up on site enable large-scale projects to be completed with the benefit of keeping transport costs down low and reducing logistics operations.
Building on site
Such mobile manufacturing facilities for producing ICFs are known as HIRSCH Satellite Plants. Each mobile plant is designed to be operated in up to three shifts for an annual production capacity of some two million ICFs, which can be used to build up to 2,000 family homes.
The advantages of this innovative building system lie in its low energy requirements due to the integrated insulation (EPS), strength to withstand natural disasters and costs saved by fast conminimum struction. Turnkey delivery and project-related relocation to any site requiredare possible within four weeks.
